Baboró - Ireland's premier arts festival for children opens on October 15th with a sparkling programme
packed with dance, theatre, visual arts, literature events, puppetry, and music. Now in its eleventh year,
Baboró has become one of the highlights of the cultural calendar for young people in Ireland. Baboró 2007
promises a creative feast for the senses featuring magical Japanese gardens, enchanting rhythm and dance
spectacles, theatre shows that touch your heart and the sensational Baby Rave. This flagship international
festival is full of colour, imagination and inspiration for children, their families, carers and teachers.
Baboró 2007 will present sixteen award-winning productions from Italy, Germany, Denmark, Australia, Scotland,
England and Ireland over seven days, October 15-21. From mythology to fantasy, everyday to imaginary - stories
are at the centre of the 2007 Baboró programme. This year's Festival sees an increase in Irish premieres,
public performances, after-school shows and a unique creative workshop for parents. The programme promises
to stretch the imaginations of younger audiences while asking important questions about the world we live in.
Baboró continues to push creative boundaries by introducing captivating new work and challenging topics to
audiences that range from 0 - 12! This year Baboró is fizzing with spectacular productions full of visual
delight, movement and wonder.
Baby Rave is a once in a lifetime experience! Bound to be the Festival hit, this is a real rave, complete with live DJ, dance instructors, chill out zone, ambient lighting and projections, for babies and children from 0 to 4 year olds and parents who are in the groove. Scottish Dance Company YDance returns to Galway with an enchanting dance production - Corryvreckan. Det Lilleturnéteater from Denmark is also back with a junkyard percussion performance - Kling Klang. Another Festival highlight will be The Japanese Garden - an interactive magic carpet from Italy. Internationally renowned TPO will take the audience on an imaginary journey - a sensory theatrical dance experience inspired by Japanese Gardens. Other breathtaking performances for younger audiences include Watch the Birdy, Egg and Spoon and Goldilocks and The Three Bears. Baboró 2007 will showcase productions that raise questions about the world we live in. The Man Who Planted Trees, an adaptation of Jean Giono's wonderful environmental story, is a magical tale for adults and children alike. A uniquely memorable blend of comedy, puppetry and inspiring storytelling, Shopping for Shoes is a play by Tim Crouch about passion and fashion, hearts and soles and how to be you! Junges Ensemble Stuttgart from Germany challenges children aged 6 years upwards with Minor Matters, which deals with importance of enjoying the aspects of life that money can't buy. Other companies to watch out for include Galway's Cups and Crowns and Blue Teapot Theatre Company, while Det Fortaellende Teater from Denmark have re-imagined the thrilling tale of Beuwulf for Baboró audiences. Baboró continues to look at other countries for inspiration in the development of quality programming for children. This year's Spotlight On…. event features Denmark in a day that includes performances, a presentation, discussions and a breakout session. This event is tailored for practitioners, performers and directors, national and international delegates. Although Denmark is a fairly small country, it is home to more than 120 children's theatres. The history of modern theatre for children in Denmark is the story of a movement, a story of solidarity and of shared victories and defeats. One of the shared goals of the companies is working together to strive and maintain a high level of quality. Guest Speaker will be Peter Manscher, Secretary General of ASSITEJ Denmark and co-ordinator of International Guests and performances at Danish Festival Teater Centrum. Baboró 2007 introduces a unique workshop for parents who would like to explore ideas, materials and fun activities to do with children that inspire creativity and imagination. This will take place at An Taibhdhearc Studio on Sat 20th October. In 2008 Baboró will host an International Conference as part of its International Festival. Bringing together artists and creative thinkers from all over the world, Baboró aims to inspire practitioners to explore new ways to create innovative and exciting work for children.
